Hot coil, also known as hot-rolled coil, is a steel product made from slabs (mainly continuous-casting slabs) that are heated and rolled into strip steel by roughing and finishing mills, then laminar cooled and coiled. As an indispensable basic material in modern industry, it is widely used in various fields such as construction, automobiles, ships, machinery, home appliances, and energy pipelines. This product possesses performance characteristics such as high strength, good ductility, and formability. China is the world's largest producer, consumer, and exporter of hot-rolled coil. In 2024, the national production capacity reached 365 million tons, with a production volume of approximately 319 million tons.
The national production capacity of hot-rolled coil reached 365.46 million tons, with a year-on-year growth rate of 6.28%. The estimated output will reach 319.0407 million tons, an increase of 9.54% compared to 2023, reaching a historical peak level. The annual export volume of hot-rolled coil is expected to reach 29.59 million tons, an increase of 44.96% year-on-year. In October 2024, the export volume of hot-rolled coil exceeded 3 million tons for the first time, reaching 3.1437 million tons, setting a record for the highest monthly export volume of hot-rolled coil.
Hot-rolled coil is produced using slabs as raw materials. After being heated to above 1200℃, the slabs are rolled through roughing and finishing mills, and then subjected to laminar cooling and coiling. Its common thickness ranges from 3 to 30mm, and width from 600 to 2500mm.
Hot-rolled coil is primarily made of materials such as carbon steel and low alloy steel. Its carbon content typically ranges from 0.05% to 0.25%, which determines its excellent plasticity and weldability. Its performance characteristics mainly include high strength, good ductility, and superior formability [10].
